Eligibility

To be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Ph.D. or Sc.D. completion by October 1, 2025
Applicants who will defend their thesis after this date are not eligible.
Within 5 years of Ph.D. award as of the application deadline (July 10, 2025).
Demonstrated excellence in research, such as solving major problems during doctoral work or introducing new approaches with significant impact.
Open to all nationalities
No U.S. citizenship is required. However, security clearance and DoD approval are mandatory for selected applicants.

What Is The Arl Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship

The ARL Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship is a highly competitive, fully funded postdoctoral opportunity for talented Ph.D. graduates in:

Physical Sciences

The fellowship allows postdocs to pursue their own independent research that aligns with ARL’s scientific goals. Fellows are given the freedom to explore, innovate, and contribute to breakthroughs in defense-related technologies.

Benefits

Selected fellows will receive one of the most generous postdoctoral packages in the U.S. government research ecosystem:

Annual Stipend: $115,000
Full health insurance (including dental and vision)
Relocation allowance
Professional travel support
One-year renewable appointment, up to a total of three years based on performance
Independent research freedom within ARL’s facilities
This is an in-residence, full-time appointment.
