Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

Hold an excellent academic record:

a- Bachelor’s degree (First Class or Upper Second/2:1) OR
b- Master’s degree (Merit or Distinction)
Have a confirmed offer or be a current student at the University of Kent

Be enrolled in one of the following divisions:

Kent Law School
School of Arts and Architecture
School of Humanities
School of Psychology
The Language Centre
School of Social Sciences
Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (within the School of Natural Sciences)
Demonstrate excellent communication skills
Clearly explain the project to a non-specialist audience
Show passion and relevance of the project to wider communities
Act as an academic ambassador for both the University and their subject area

Benefits

Each selected scholar will receive:

Up to £10,000 (can include tuition and research costs)
Funding support for a research stay in the USA for up to one year
Option to reapply for a second year of funding (in exceptional cases)
One-on-one academic support and enhanced research exposure

Open to applicants of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

Who Should Apply

This scholarship is ideal for postgraduate students at Kent whose research:

Has an American component
Requires research in the United States (e.g., archives, expert access, or fieldwork)
Involves transatlantic academic collaboration
Preference is given to students without prior extended experience in the USA .

Application Requirements

All applications must be submitted through the Kent Vision Portal before the deadline. Required documents include:

Research Proposal (~2,000 words)
CV

Cover Letter :

Motivation for applying
Names of two referees
Proposed Budget Plan for the scholarship usage

Two Academic References :

On official letterhead
Must address the applicant’s academic suitability
Sent directly via email (if upload not possible)
Note : All files must be in Microsoft Word or PDF format. Google Docs or SharePoint links are not accepted.

This scholarship was established in memory of Christine Bolt , an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Kent, and funded by her late husband Ian Bolt . Their legacy continues to empower global research by University of Kent students, promoting academic engagement with the United States .
