Ernst Mach Grant ASEA-UNINET for PhD and Postdoc in Austria 2027

The Ernst Mach Grant ASEA-UNINET is a scholarship scheme financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research and administered by the OeAD, Austria's agency for education and internationalisation. It is offered within the ASEAN-European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET) and supports citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam who wish to study or research at an Austrian member university of the network.

Three grant types are available in the 2027/28 call. The Full PhD Grant funds a complete doctorate in Austria for up to 36 months. The Postdoc Grant supports a research stay of four to six months for academics who teach or research at an ASEA-UNINET member university in one of the five eligible countries. The Music Practice Grant funds nine months of study at an Austrian music university and is decided after auditions.

Grant holders receive EUR 1,300 per month, and PhD grantees also receive a mobility subsidy of EUR 300 per month. A travel subsidy of up to EUR 1,200 is available for the journey to Austria. The OeAD describes the award as a supplementary grant: accommodation, health insurance and certain university charges must be met partly from the grantee's own resources, and grantees are expected to arrange accommodation and insurance through the OeAD housing and insurance services.

The call for 2027/28 opens on 15 September 2026 on the scholarships.at portal. Applications for the Music Practice Grant close on 15 December 2026, while PhD and postdoc applications close on 1 March 2027 at 23:59 CET. Applications pass a formal check, are assessed by experts and, for shortlisted candidates, are followed by an interview. Doctoral grants must begin by summer 2028 and all grants must end by the close of 2028.

The grant is one of the few dedicated channels for South-East Asian researchers to pursue a fully supervised doctorate or a research stay in Austria, and it strengthens the academic partnerships that ASEA-UNINET has built between Austrian and ASEAN universities since 1994.
