Educational Background: Master’s degree (M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing., or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Water Resources Management, or related sciences. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

Additional Conditions: Only international (non-German) applicants are eligible. At the time of nomination to DAAD (December 2025): No more than 6 years since last degree. The PhD project investigates microbial interactions and their impact on greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment plants. Research methods include:
16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, metagenomics & metatranscriptomics
Aerobic/anaerobic enrichment of microbial communities
Electrochemical sensors, FTIR, HPLC, IC, and GC-MS for emissions quantification
Laboratory microcosms and in situ field experiments
