Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy all of the following conditions:

Must be an international student from an Asian country.
Must be enrolled in a private, public, or national university in Tokyo.
Must reside in Tokyo at the time of application.
Must receive a recommendation from the university president or dean—individual applications are not accepted.
Must be able to communicate in Japanese (required for the interview process).
Students who previously received this scholarship for less than one year are not eligible.
Government-sponsored students cannot apply.
Age Limit: No age restriction.

Benefits

Monthly stipend based on academic level:

Doctoral Students: ¥150,000 per month
Master’s Students: ¥120,000 per month
Bachelor’s / Junior College Students: ¥100,000 per month

Additional details:

Funding Period: Up to 2 years (1 year for junior college students)
No tuition exemption
No enrollment or examination fee reduction
No additional financial support systems included
Approximately 40–50 students are selected each year.

Step-by-Step Process
1. Receive nomination from your university
Your university’s scholarship office must select and recommend you. Only recommended students can apply.

2. Prepare the required documents:

Statement of Reasons for Applying (PDF)
Any additional documents requested by your university
3. Submit documents to your university’s scholarship office
They will forward all materials to the Hasegawa Foundation.

4. Screening Process:

Document Review: Evaluation based on recommendation content and academic performance
Interview: Conducted in Japanese, focusing on motivation, personality, and communication skills

5. Final Selection:

Successful candidates are notified via their university.
