To be eligible for the MEXT Scholarship at Osaka University , you must:

Nationality:

Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

Age Requirement:

Be under 25 years old for undergraduate programs.
Be under 35 years old for graduate (Master's/PhD) programs.
(As of April 1 of the year of arrival in Japan.)

Academic Background:

For undergraduate programs : Must have completed 12 years of school education (or expected to graduate before arrival in Japan).
For Master’s programs : Must hold a bachelor's degree (or expected to graduate).
For Doctoral programs : Must hold a Master’s degree (or expected to graduate).

Health Condition:

Must be physically and mentally fit to study in Japan.

Language Proficiency:

No specific requirement for Japanese language proficiency for English-taught programs.

A Embassy Recommendation

Pass the first screening conducted by the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country (includes document review, written exams, and interview).
For graduate programs, applicants must then obtain a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from Osaka University via their AAD system .

B University Recommendation

Must be affiliated with a partner university or institution with which Osaka University has a formal agreement.
Pass the relevant entrance examination or selection process at Osaka University.

1 Undergraduate Level

There are two routes:

Apply via the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your home country.
Initial screening includes a document review, written exam, and interview .
Selected students take a one-year Japanese language course at Osaka University before beginning their degree.
Students who pass the entrance exam proceed to the undergraduate program.

2 Graduate Level Masters Doctoral Programs

Apply through your local Japanese Embassy or Consulate General.
Students may begin with a 6–12 month research student phase , which includes language training if needed.
After passing the graduate entrance exam, students can enter a full Master’s or Doctoral program .

Important Deadlines for Embassy Recommendation:

February–March 2025: Application to Japanese Embassy or Consulate General
May–July 2025: First screening (documents, exam, interview)
August 2025: Request letter of acceptance from Osaka University via AAD
September 1, 2025 (Japan Time) : Final deadline for AAD submission
