Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Obtain permission from a preferred SSP supervisor before applying.
Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent after 18 years of education) or be scheduled to graduate before the enrollment date.
Be 35 years old or younger at the time of enrollment (in principle).
Have an excellent academic record in both bachelor's and master's studies.
Possess the intention, knowledge, and research skills relevant to the chosen research field.
Demonstrate high English proficiency: TOEFL iBT: Minimum 72 (Writing 17) IELTS: Minimum 5.5 (Writing 5.5) CET-6 or WSK (PETS-5) accepted. (Applicants may be exempt from English tests under certain conditions.)

The SSP program covers diverse Engineering fields under the Graduate School of Engineering. Applicants must choose a research area listed under the SSP Supervisor List, which may include but is not limited to:

Mechanical Engineering
Electrical & Electronic Engineering
Environmental Systems
Information Systems
Material Science
Biotechnology and Bioengineering

Benefits

Successful SSP scholars will receive:

Full tuition waiver (535,800 yen/year)
Exemption from entrance examination fee (15,000 yen) and enrollment fee (300,000 yen)
Monthly stipend of 150,000 yen for living expenses (for 3 years)
Travel & initial living allowance of 150,000 yen (for international students residing outside Japan with “Student” residence status)

Application Procedure

Choose up to 2 supervisors from the [SSP Supervisor List].
Submit the Online Pre-Application Request Form via KUT's website.
Wait for supervisor’s response (within 2 weeks).
If both supervisors accept, choose only one for the formal application.
Prepare all required SSP application documents.
Submit your application by post to KUT before the deadline.
Only applicants with supervisor permission can proceed.
Screening involves document review, interview, and exam in the specialized subject (usually conducted online).
Successful candidates receive notification and must complete registration.

Frequently Asked Questions Faqs

Can I apply without contacting a supervisor first? No. You must obtain permission from a preferred supervisor before you can submit a formal application.
Is the SSP program only for Engineering fields? Yes, it is primarily for the Department of Engineering under the Graduate School of Engineering, but research topics can be interdisciplinary within related areas.
Do I need Japanese language skills to apply? No. The SSP program is conducted entirely in English. However, basic Japanese skills may be helpful for daily life in Japan.
