Eligibility
To qualify for the NHS Bursary, you must meet specific criteria related to your course and residency status. You are eligible if: You are studying to become a doctor or dentist. You are enrolled in an undergraduate medical or dental course lasting 5 to 6 years, or a graduate entry course lasting 3 to 4 years. Your course is included in the Office for Students' medical and dental student intake. You have previously received the NHS Bursary. You are studying medicine or dentistry as a second degree. Residency Requirement You must normally live in England and be an English resident on the first day of your first academic year. All eligible students in 2023 received a £1,000 non-means tested bursary.
The means-tested bursary for the 2023-2024 academic year varied based on living circumstances:
Up to £3,191 if you study in London and do not live with your parents.
Up to £2,643 if you study outside of London and do not live with your parents.
Up to £2,207 if you live in your parental home, regardless of your university’s location.
The means-tested bursary is calculated based on income, including your parents’ income if you are a dependent student or your spouse, partner’s, or civil partner’s income if you are independent.
If your NHS Bursary application is successful, the NHS will pay a tuition fee contribution directly to your university:
Up to £9,250 for undergraduate courses lasting 5 or 6 years.
Up to £3,715 for graduate entry courses lasting 3 or 4 years.
Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for additional support. These allowances include:
