Royal Society UK University Research Fellowship 2026 is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at UK Universities.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Hold a PhD with 3 to 8 years of postdoctoral research experience (excluding career breaks)
Not currently hold a permanent academic post
Not have previously held an equivalent fellowship granting independent research group status
Must be conducting research within natural sciences, as defined by the Royal Society
Open to all nationalities
Non-UK applicants are eligible and may apply under the Global Talent Visa fast-track route
Those applying from Ireland will be funded by Science Foundation Ireland and must follow specific eligibility criteria

Funding Cap : Up to £1.87 million over the full period

Application And Assessment Process

Applications are submitted via the Royal Society’s Flexi-Grant® system . The multi-stage evaluation includes:

Eligibility checks
Initial panel reviews by two scientific experts
Independent peer reviews for longlisted candidates
Shortlisting for interviews
Final interviews held in-person at the Royal Society headquarters in London

Panels are divided by discipline:

Panel Ai: Physics, Earth sciences, cosmology, environmental sciences
Panel Aii: Chemistry, engineering
Panel Aiii: Mathematics, computer science, theoretical physics
Panel Bi: Biology, plant sciences, zoology
Panel Bii: Biomedical sciences
