Support UK universities and non-profit research institutions in recruiting world-class talent.

Promote strategic research leadership in high-priority disciplines.

Enhance the UK’s research capability in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This highly competitive scheme is designed to strengthen critical research mass, attract senior-level academics from abroad, and encourage long-term institutional collaboration.

Eligibility

The fellowship is aimed at researchers who meet the following criteria:

Hold a senior-level research or academic position or demonstrate clear leadership potential
Have international recognition in their research field
Are based outside the UK and intend to relocate to a UK research institution
Have a host UK university or institution willing to support the application
Will focus their work on a strategic research area identified by the host institution
Equity and inclusion are central to this fellowship. Applicants from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply.

Degree Level

Royal Society UK Wolfson Fellowship 2025 is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at The Royal Society.

Funding Coverage And Benefits

Successful applicants can receive funding to cover:

Salary enhancement: Up to 20% of total salary
Research costs: Including consumables, travel, and small equipment (up to £10,000)
Research assistant: Hiring support staff
PhD studentship(s)
Relocation and visa costs for fellows and their dependents
Childcare support for conference and research travel
Flexible options for part-time work, parental leave, and health-related adjustments
The fellowship not only funds research but also empowers researchers through access to career development, leadership training, and public engagement opportunities provided by the Royal Society.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted via the Royal Society’s Flexi-Grant® system. The process includes:

Contacting your intended host institution in the UK.
Preparing a research proposal aligned with the strategic goals of the institution.
Submitting full application documents through the online portal by 4 September 2025.
Support for disabled applicants is available, with reasonable accommodations throughout the process.

There are typically three application rounds each year . The current round (2025 Round 2) is actively accepting submissions.
