Be a new international student applying for admission to an undergraduate program at Thompson Rivers University

Hold citizenship of a country that is under-represented on the TRU campus (five or fewer TRU students from that country)

Meet one of the following academic/language benchmarks: a minimum 3.0 GPA (or equivalent), or IELTS 6.5 overall, or TOEFL iBT 88

Meet TRU's general admission requirements for the chosen program (secondary school completion with the required subjects and grades)

Enrol full-time; awards are applied to tuition once the student is registered

The TRU International Diversity Award is available to new international students entering undergraduate studies at Thompson Rivers University:

Diversity award credit applied automatically to tuition for eligible new international students from under-represented countries (the value is set by TRU each intake)

No application required – the award is added to your admission file when the criteria are met

Can be combined with TRU's other automatic entrance awards for high achievers: Academic Excellence Award (up to CAD 2,000 – CAD 1,000 per semester for 2 semesters, 86%+ average) and Exceptional Student Award (up to CAD 4,000 – CAD 1,000 per semester for up to 4 semesters, 80%+ average with direct entry)

Eligible to apply for TRU's Undergraduate Awards Application (International) every year by 30 September for further merit-based scholarships and awards

Access to paid co-op work terms and up to 20 hours/week of off-campus work during studies, plus the Post-Graduation Work Permit route after graduation

Eligible Nationalities

International students from countries that are under-represented at TRU – defined by the university as nations with five or fewer students currently on campus. Students from all regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific) may qualify; TRU checks the representation of your country when it assesses your admission application.

Application Procedure

There is no separate scholarship form. Follow the normal TRU admission process and the award is applied automatically if you qualify:

Choose your undergraduate program on the TRU website and check its specific admission requirements.

Apply online through TRU's international application portal and pay the application fee.

Upload your academic transcripts and certificates (with certified English translations where needed), a copy of your passport, and proof of English proficiency (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 88 or an accepted equivalent).

Submit before your intake deadline – 1 October 2026 for January 2027, 1 February 2027 for May 2027, or 1 May 2027 for September 2027. Popular programs may close earlier, so apply as early as possible.

TRU reviews your application, checks the representation of your country on campus and, if you qualify, adds the diversity award to your offer of admission.

After you register, the award is credited to your tuition account. You can also submit the Undergraduate Awards Application (International) by 30 September each year for additional merit awards.
