Eligibility
To be considered for the UMGF, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. These include:
Academic Excellence: A minimum admission GPA of 3.0 is required, although some departments may have higher GPA requirements.
Admission Status: Applicants must be admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a Master’s or Ph.D. student. Pre-master’s and Occasional students are not eligible.
Active Student Account: Applicants must not have an active, admission-related hold on their student account during their provisional admission period.
Full-Time Enrollment: Recipients must be registered full-time in a graduate program of study in the unit that recommends them for a UMGF.

The UMGF offers two levels of awards based on the degree pursued:
UMGF Master’s: $14,000 per year for 12 or 24 months, with a maximum total value of $28,000.
UMGF Doctoral: $18,000 per year for 12, 24, 36, or 48 months, with a maximum total value of $72,000.
The duration and amount of funding are determined by the department or unit in line with the fellowship's eligibility criteria.
The UMGF provides varying periods of support depending on the number of months a student has already completed in their program:
Master’s Students
0-4 months completed: Eligible for up to 24 months of funding.
5-16 months completed: Eligible for up to 12 months of funding.
More than 16 months completed: Not eligible.
Doctoral Students
0-4 months completed: Eligible for up to 48 months of funding.
5-16 months completed: Eligible for up to 36 months of funding.
17-28 months completed: Eligible for up to 24 months of funding.
29-40 months completed: Eligible for up to 12 months of funding.
More than 40 months completed: Not eligible.
Recipients of the UMGF must begin their award in May, September, or January. If they are unable to do so within the academic year, they must decline the award.
