Additional Information

Degree Level

This award is for a Postgraduate Research degree (PhD) in Physics.

Available Subjects

The University of Sussex's research group focuses on exploring neutral atomic gases to understand their quantum-level properties and interactions with external fields and materials . Leveraging ultra-sensitive quantum magnetic sensors, the team develops advanced magnetic sensing technologies applicable to nanomaterials, novel touchscreens, electric vehicle battery monitoring, navigation, brain imaging, and intracellular signalling.
The PhD project aims to produce Bose-Einstein condensates on atom chips for high-sensitivity magnetic field probing near surfaces. The candidate will characterize the magnetic microscope, prepare and analyze nanostructured and biological samples, and enhance the microscope's sensitivity to electric currents in two-dimensional (2D) materials. This role involves hands-on experimental work with ultracold atomic systems, atom-surface interactions, current flow imaging in 2D samples, and comparative studies with other imaging techniques.

Benefits

Fully-funded tuition fees for 3.5 years. Tax-free bursary of £19,237 per annum for living costs. Additional annual financial support of £1,650 for research training and travel.

Eligible Nationalities

This scholarship is open to domestic and international students of all nationalities.
