Eligibility

To be eligible for the 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholarship Competition, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Intend to pursue a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Be nominated by their Goldwater Campus Representative (self-nominations are not accepted). Transfer students and veterans are encouraged to apply and should work closely with their campus representatives during the nomination process.

Application Timeline For The 2026 Goldwater Scholarship

September 2, 2025: Online application opens. Early September 2025 – January 2026: Internal campus nomination deadlines (varies by institution). January 30, 2026: Final nomination deadline (5:00 PM CT). Late February 2026: Nomination packets reviewed. Mid-March 2026: Board of Trustees vote on Scholars. March 27, 2026 (Last Friday of March): Announcement of 2026 Scholars and Honorable Mentions.

How To Apply

Find your Campus Representative using the official Campus Representative Locator. Consult early with your representative to meet internal deadlines. Prepare a research essay, academic transcripts, and recommendation letters. Submit your nomination through your institution before the January 30, 2026 deadline.
The Foundation also hosts Open House sessions for both campus representatives and students to guide applicants through the process. Student sessions are scheduled on September 17, 2025 and November 5, 2025 via Zoom.
